Horseman’s Games Fundraiser for National C.O.P.S., by Trisha Byrd, sister Officer Todd Bahr, Fredericksburg Police (VA), EOW 6/6/08

On August 6, 2011, at the Washington State Horse Park in Cle Elum, WA; I held a Washington State Horseman‘s games fundraiser for Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.). I searched my heart for ways to give back to the organization that helped me through the most difficult time in my life...the day I lost my brother in the line of duty.

Trisha ByrdTodd Allen Bahr (EOW 6/6/08, badge # 337) was a police officer for the Fredericksburg Police Department in Fredericksburg, VA. I had never heard of C.O.P.S. before, but the Washington State C.O.P.S. chapter called me when they heard of my loss. I was so grateful for all the help, guidance and support everyone had given my family and I. I don‘t think we could have made it through this difficult time without the love of our Heavenly Father and the support of C.O.P.S.

At the fundraiser, we had the presentation of colors along with three other riders who carried different police/fallen officer flags. The girls did a wonderful job. We had about 25 riders participate in the games, which consisted of timed speed events such as: barrels, poles, flags, figure 8, cal stake, keyhole, keyrace, 2 man 3 barrel and 2 mancal stake.

National Police Week 2011 Reflections

Emory Lane, brother, Undersheriff Matthew Lane, Ferry County SO, EOW 05/30/2003

As I prepared for my 5th trip back to National Police Week (NPW), I was reflecting back to my 1st year, remembering the tears I cried and the fear I had. I saw how far I had come in the years since Matt was killed. I was ready to return to NPW and help the "freshmen". I was ready to be there to encourage them. I was ready to give complete strangers a hug and let them know someone understands.

In one of the sessions, I spoke to the group and illustrated to them that being here is like being a freshman in high school, as you‟re afraid, you don't know anyone, you don't know what to do, you don't know where to go. But as the next couple of days go on, you will hear some incredible stories from survivors who have been here many times. Stories you won‟t believe can happen. Stories of strength. You will meet the strongest people you could ever meet. You will make new friends. As the years go by and you return to NPW, you will keep those friends and you will make new ones. You will see how you have grown. You will feel stronger. You will feel like you have a say in the way your life goes. You will see that the emotions you are going through now are normal and you‟re not different.
